Rugby Rogues strategy: five decisions for beginners

A useful card is the one that fits the current pitch. These five checks help you make a plan before playing your turn.

1. Who has the ball?

Possession controls which cards can be played. With the ball, look for progress or support. Without it, set your line and challenge the carrier. In the first tutorial exercise, the Rogues have possession. Wide Pass is the guided attack action; Defensive Wall needs the defensive phase.

2. What can your energy pay for?

The cost is printed on every card, and a turn normally restores one energy. The tutorial sets energy to 1 for its recovery exercise: Acceleration is unavailable, so Hydration restores 3, then the turn adds one more. This is a concrete example of choosing a setup move for the next decision. Regrouping also restores the normal point, but gives the opponent a chance to act.

3. Is your player in position?

A tackle needs a defender within reach of the ball carrier. If all defenders are too far away, the game explains why the card cannot be used. In attack, a pass is valuable when it reaches support able to exploit space. Look at the pitch before reading the card’s apparent strength.

4. What can the opponent do next?

After your card resolves, the other side responds. A move that saves energy or preserves possession may be better than an immediate but risky gain. Near the try line, Acceleration can score a five-point try in the guided exercise; in a normal match, weigh that possibility against the defenders’ positions.

5. Does your deck work in both phases?

A deck built only for attack leaves fewer choices when the opponent controls the ball. Keep ways to advance, defend and recover energy. After several games, note which cards remain unavailable most often and adjust your selection. You can always revisit the guided match to test the basics.
