Rugby sevens basics for Rugby Rogues players

A few real rugby sevens rules make the game easier to read. Rugby Rogues borrows the sporting idea, then applies its own turns, cards and energy.

Why seven?

In rugby sevens, each side fields seven players on a full-size rugby pitch. The space between players makes running lines and support particularly important. An ordinary match has two seven-minute halves, subject to stoppages and competition rules. Rugby Rogues uses a team of seven but follows a card-based match clock; it is not a full simulation of the official laws.

The practice-match screen makes the team size visible: seven green Rogues face seven red opponents. The highlighted carrier identifies where the ball is. Before selecting any card, find that player and the nearest support or defender.

Why pass backwards?

A hand pass in rugby must not go forward. The receiving player can then run into space and carry the team upfield. The tutorial demonstrates this with Wide Pass: the ball travels backwards to support, and the receiver advances automatically. The pass itself and the following run are separate parts of one tactical decision.

What changes in defence?

When the opponent has the ball, your attacking cards no longer fit the phase. The tutorial asks for Defensive Wall, which resets the line and slows the opposing advance. A tackle card in an ordinary match also needs a defender close enough to the carrier. Position and possession are therefore as important as the card name.

How are points scored?

Under World Rugby laws, grounding the ball in the opposition in-goal area scores a five-point try. The following conversion can add two. Rugby Rogues uses those values, while its conversion is controlled by an on-screen timing marker. For the sport’s full laws and exceptions, consult World Rugby’s Laws of the Game.
